Sarah Rothe is a contemporary jeweller and designer based in South Australia, whose practice explores the relationship between material, process, and wearable form. Since graduating with a Bachelor of Visual Arts specialising in Jewellery from the Adelaide Centre for the Arts in 2006, Rothe has established herself as arespected maker, educator, and advocate within the Australian jewellery sector. Following her studies, she was selected as an Associate in the Jewellery and Metal Studio at JamFactory (2007–2008) and became a tenant of the studio in 2009. She later worked from Gray Street Workshop, an independent studio collective from 2010 to 2012. Alongside her studio practice, Rothe has maintained a strong commitment to education and industry development. She has held various roles within the Jewellery and Metal program at the University of South Australia and Adelaide University since 2010, including Technical Officer and Studio Educator/Lecturer. From 2014 to 2021, Rothe operated Sarah Rothe jewellery & design, a retail gallery and workshop space located in Adelaide's historic Regent Arcade. During this time she also served as Chair of the South Australia and Northern Territory Branch of the Jewellers Association of Australia (2018–2021). In 2017-2019, Rothe was appointed Creative Director of JamFactory Jewellery and Metal. And now working from JamFactory open studios, in the historic Seppeltsfield Wines Estate. Rothe’s work is held in significant public collections, including the Powerhouse Museum, Sydney, and the Art Gallery of South Australia and her brooch was given as an official gift from South Australia to Hilliary Clinton. Sarah’s love of titanium started early in her jewellery training and has remained a focus and specialty in her collections ever-since. She relishes in titanium’s constraints and inherent qualities, unique to this striking metal. Utalising titanium’s inherent strength, and lightweight features, Sarah is able to translate fine and delicate natural forms into long lasting and striking designs. Combined with Titanium’s ability to form an array of shimmering colours through refraction and the use of an electrical process, no dyes or chemicals are needed to achieve these vibrant hues. Sarah's work also references the natural and organic world, often encasing gemstones in coral-like, twisted and free-forming structures. Her designs evoke the raw beauty of oceanic formations, local vine twigs and the intricate veins of leaves, transforming precious metals into sculptural, almost living forms. Creating pieces that feel as though they've been unearthed from the depths of the sea or the heart of the forest.Visit Sarah's studio/workshop at the lovely Seppeltsfield Winery in the Barossa Valley.
